NCUA CHAIRMAN DENNIS DOLLAR COMMENDS
DEFENSE CREDIT UNIONS FOR SERVICE TO
AMERICA’S MILITARY FAMILIES

Dublin, Ireland April 28, 2003 — Addressing the 30th Annual European Defense Credit Union Sub-Council Conference, National Credit Union Administration Chairman Dennis Dollar commended the defense-oriented credit unions for their “steadfast support and solid member service to the men, women, and families of the United States military.”

“Once again, we have seen the ‘best in the world’ United States military, partnering together with coalition troops from other committed nations, as defenders of freedom in liberating Iraq and freeing the world of an aggressive dictator,” said Chairman Dollar. “Americans from all walks of life have joined in expressing our appreciation for the sacrifices our military men and women, as well as their families; have made for the values we support as a nation. The term “support the troops” has become a part of our nation’s daily lexicon, but it has become more than words for America’s defense credit unions. It has been a call to action that is an extension of what you do each day, both in times of war and in peace time.”

“Your role as the financial partner for these families reflect the very heartbeat of the credit union philosophy,” Dollar told the audience. “Not only financial services, but many in the credit union community sent care packages to the troops and supported your neighbors and family members involved in the hostilities with great support and compassion. Your dedication to your members is highly commendable and I commend you for your commitment.”

“As we look to the future, defense credit unions will continue to play a vital role in America’s economy and the world’s stability as your members continue to defend freedom and the values we hold dear in America,” said Dollar. “If indeed extending service to more underserved Americans is a key ingredient in NCUA’s Access Across America initiative, no group of credit unions is more involved on a daily basis in serving low to moderate income Americans than are the defense credit unions who are meeting the needs of our soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines. I am pleased to have you on the front lines of meeting these member needs and furthering our objectives under the banner of Access Across America.”

Credit unions comprised of the European Defense Credit Union Sub-Council are Andrews Federal Credit Union, Global Credit Union, Keesler Federal Credit Union, Navy Federal Credit Union, Pentagon Federal Credit Union, State Department Federal Credit Union, Service Credit Union, and USA Federal Credit Union. These credit unions have over 3.2 million members worldwide.

Chairman Dollar was appointed by President George W. Bush on September 13, 2001, to serve as NCUA Chairman for the federal agency that charters, regulates, and/or insures nearly 10,000 credit unions throughout the United States and its territories. He had previously served as Acting Chairman since February 2001 and has served as a Member of the NCUA Board since 1997.

The National Credit Union Administration, governed by a three-member board appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate, is the independent federal agency that regulates, charters and supervises federal credit unions. NCUA, with the backing of the full faith and credit of the U.S. government, operates and manages the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, insuring the deposits of more than 80 million account holders in all federal credit unions and the overwhelming majority of state-chartered credit unions.
