Environmental Issues AF names environmental winners
WASHINGTON (AFPN) -- The Air Force civil engineer announced the winners of the Gen. Thomas D. White Environmental Award for 2003. Nine of the winners are eligible for the secretary of defense environmental-security award and will go forward as the nominees. The 2003 winners are: -- Environmental Quality Award (non-industrial): Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla. -- Environmental Quality Award (Reserve component): 934th Airlift Wing at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport Air Reserve Station, Minn.

The Air Force operates many aircraft and space systems that are constantly interacting with the environment. Atmospheric interactions such as exhaust gases forming contrails, chaff and flares deployment that produce smoke, aerial pest or weed control spraying, or in-flight emergency fuel releases usually have very minor environmental impacts over a very limited geographical area.
