Washington, D.C. -- The Commerce Department today imposed a civil penalty of $2,500 on DATRAC AG, a Swiss firm, for alleged violations of the Export Administration Regulations (EAR), Frank W. Deliberti, Acting Assistant Secretary for Export Enforcement, announced.
The Department alleged that DATRAC reexported U.S.-origin data communications equipment from Switzerland to Singapore on or about April 16, 1992, without obtaining from the Bureau of Export Administration the required authorization. While neither admitting nor denying the allegation, DATRAC agreed to pay the civil penalty. The case was investigated by the Commerce Department's San Jose Office of Export Enforcement.
The Department of Commerce controls and licenses the export and re-export of dual-use commodities and technical data. Commerce's Bureau of Export Administration maintains controls on these items for reasons of national security, foreign policy, non-proliferation and short supply.
In April of 2002 the Bureau of Export Administration (BXA) changed its name to the Bureau of Industry and Security(BIS). For historical purposes we have not changed the references to BXA in the legacy documents found in the Archived Press and Public Information.
