Washington, DC -- United States District Court Judge William Walls of the District of New Jersey has fined Digital Creations Corporation of Closter, New Jersey to a criminal penalty of $800,000 for violating the Export Administration Act and Regulations, Frank Deliberti, the Commerce Department's Acting Assistant Secretary for Export Enforcement announced.
In December 1994, Digital Creations Corporation pleaded guilty to charges that it illegally exported a DEC computer to the People's Republic of China without first having obtained the required export license from the Department of Commerce. The case was investigated by Commerce's Office of Export Enforcement New York field office.
The Department of Commerce controls and licenses the export and re-export of dual-use commodities and technical data. Commerce's Bureau of Export Administration maintains and enforces these controls for reasons of national security, foreign policy, nonproliferation and short supply.
In April of 2002 the Bureau of Export Administration (BXA)
changed its name to the Bureau of Industry and Security(BIS). For historical
purposes we have not changed the references to BXA in the legacy documents
found in the Archived Press and Public Information.
