Commerce Department Seeks Public Comment on the Proposed Revision of Defense Priorities and Allocations System Regulation

WASHINGTON -- The Department of Commerce is seeking public comment on the proposed revision of a regulation designed to ensure the availability of the country’s industrial resources in case of a national emergency.

In a Federal Register Notice (62 FR 51389-51397), October 1, 1997, the department said it proposed to revise the Defense Priorities and Allocations System (DPAS) regulation (15 CFR 700) by updating, modifying, or clarifying a number of its provisions, thus making it more effective and efficient in the post-Cold war era. The Department will consider public comment on the proposed revisions and on any other DPAS provisions.

DPAS implements the priorities and allocations authority of Title I of the Defense Production Act of 1950, as amended, and the priorities authority of Section 18 of the Selective Service Act of 1948, as amended, as these authorities pertain to industrial resources. It can also be used to support civil emergency preparedness programs under Title VI of the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act.

To obtain more information about the Federal Register Notice and the DPAS revisions or to make a comment, please contact Richard V. Meyers, DPAS Program Manager, Office of Strategic Industries and Economic Security, U.S. Department of Commerce, Tel. (202) 482-3634, FAX (202) 482-5650, or E-mail: rmeyers@bxa.doc.gov.

Note

In April of 2002 the Bureau of Export Administration (BXA) changed its name to the Bureau of Industry and Security(BIS). For historical purposes we have not changed the references to BXA in the legacy documents found in the Archived Press and Public Information.
