Washington, D.C. -- The Commerce Department's Bureau of Export Administration (BXA) has opened a new satellite center for the Navy's Best Manufacturing Practices (BMP) program to provide government agencies and industry with information about how the BMP's programs can be used to improve the manufacturing competitiveness of U.S. companies. The center is located in room 3073 of the Commerce Hoover building.
"This is the latest step in a long and mutually beneficial partnership between BXA and the Navy. It represents an exciting new opportunity for both our organizations," said Commerce Under Secretary William A. Reinsch.
The BMP program was organized to identify cutting-edge developments in the manufacturing sector, disseminate information on these practices to the industrial base which supplies the Department of Defense, and develop methods for U.S. industry to use the data. The BMP data is public, non-proprietary information which BMP makes broadly available.
BXA and the BMP program have worked together for several years on meeting the challenge of helping U.S. industry to become more competitive and diversify into new markets. The two organizations have successfully cooperated to promote defense conversion and have co-exhibited at conferences around the country.
BXA has a strong interest in maintaining and enhancing the health and competitiveness of the U.S. defense industrial base. BXA has a critical role in the Department's efforts to develop industrial capabilities and critical technology assessments of key sectors, analyze offsets in defense trade, monitor foreign acquisitions of U.S. companies, assess the impact of imports on national security, assist small and medium-sized businesses in their defense diversification and competitive enhancement efforts, and provide defense trade advocacy on behalf of U.S. exporters.

In April of 2002 the Bureau of Export Administration (BXA) changed its name to the Bureau of Industry and Security(BIS). For historical purposes we have not changed the references to BXA in the legacy documents found in the Archived Press and Public Information.
