INTRAMURAL NIAID RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
INRO 2005

FEBRUARY 6–10, 2005

Application Deadline Extended to October 25th, 2004

All letters of reference must be received by October 29th, 2004 for your application to be considered.

A Program Offered by the
DIVISION OF INTRAMURAL RESEARCH
NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF ALLERGY AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES
NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) takes pride in offering its annual program for underrepresented minority students interested in exploring career opportunities in allergy, immunology, and infectious diseases. The Intramural NIAID Research Opportunities program, or INRO, will introduce students to research and training opportunities in NIAID's Division of Intramural Research and the Vaccine Research Center.

Students participating in the 5-day INRO program will learn about some of today's hottest biomedical topics—HIV, SARS, West Nile virus, and biodefense—from some of the world's premier scientists. Each student will explore training opportunities, such as summer internship or postbaccalaureate, predoctoral, or postdoctoral programs, to identify the experience that best meets the participant's career goals.

What will the INRO 2005 program include?

The INRO 2005 program will include the following:

  • Scientific lectures by premier scientists
  • Tours of NIAID laboratories
  • Opportunities to engage in interviews with NIAID principal investigators seeking to fill both summer and 1- to 2-year research internship positions
  • Expenses covered include—
    • Transportation and airfare to and from Bethesda, MD
    • Hotel accommodations
    • Meals

What training opportunities will participants learn about at INRO 2005?
The INRO program seeks students desiring placements at the NIAID to conduct research in allergy, immunology, or infectious diseases. Students selected to attend INRO 2005 will learn about the various training opportunities available to them at NIAID. These training programs include—

  • Summer Internship Program
Successful applicants will join one of NIAID's research laboratories for a minimum of 8 weeks between late May and August. Some flexibility in scheduling exists to accommodate individual student needs.
  • Postbaccalaureate Intramural Research Training
Recent college graduates will spend a year engaged in biomedical investigation at one of NIAID's research laboratories. In addition, during their tenure in the program, postbaccalaureate fellows also are expected to initiate the application process for graduate or medical school. The duration of the program is normally 1 year, but the fellowship can be extended for an additional year provided the performance of the trainee is satisfactory and continued support by the laboratory is available.
  • Postdoctoral Intramural Research Training
Various training opportunities are available in NIAID's intramural laboratories and at the NIH's research hospital, the Warren Grant Magnuson Clinical Center. These opportunities include training in the basic sciences as well as subspecialty and fellowship training for physicians and dentists.
  • Graduate Partnerships Program
Students spend their first year at the university taking graduate-level courses. In the second year, students move partially or completely to the NIH campus for their research while continuing in higher level graduate courses. The following years are dedicated completely to research. Affiliation with the home university is maintained throughout the graduate program experience.
  • Year-Off Training Program for Graduate and Medical Students
These programs are designed to provide research training at NIAID for students who are enrolled in graduate or medical degree programs and have permission from their institution to interrupt their current education, with the understanding that they will return to their degree-granting institution within 1 year.

INRO 2005 is intended to support underrepresented minority students interested in pursuing a research career in allergy, immunology, or infectious diseases. If your interests lie outside the biomedical research areas of NIAID, NIH offers a number of other training programs for which you may be eligible. For information on all of NIH's training programs, please visit www.training.nih.gov.

Participation in INRO does not guarantee a training position at NIAID. Every effort will be made to identify laboratories within the NIAID that would be a good match for INRO participants.
