12/01/03 - Livingstone, Zambia. On December 1, 2003, Secretary Tommy G. Thompson led a parade and the U.S. Delegation as it marched in the World AIDS Day parade.

12/01/03 - Livingstone, Zambia. After marching in the World AIDS Day parade, delegates visited the Livingstone Street Children Association (LISCA) Center, which provides services to orphans and children living with HIV/AIDS.

The Secretary then visited Kigali, Rwanda.

12/02/03 - Kigali, Rwanda. At their first stop in Kigali, Rwanda, the U.S. Delegation visited the Gisozi Genocide Memorial dedicated to the more than 300,000 Rwandans killed in the Rwandan civil war.

12/02/03 - Kigali, Rwanda. Immediately after the visit to the Genocide Memorial, the U.S. Delegation stopped by a new clinic, run by the Kigali police force, to dedicate a new building.

12/03/03 - Kigali, Rwanda. On December 3, the U.S. Delegation traveled one hour into the Rwandan countryside to visit the Kabgayi Hospital, a full social service center, clinic, and hospital owned and operated by the Catholic Church.

12/04/03 - Kisamu, Kenya. Next the U.S. Delegation traveled to Kenya. After a meeting in Nairobi announcing a new corporate program to help fight HIV/AIDS, the Delegation traveled to Kisamu, Kenya, to visit the Provincial Hospital and a large HHS HIV/AIDS and Malaria research facility (Kisian).

12/04/03 - Kisamu, Kenya. After visiting the Provincial Hospital, the U.S. Delegation traveled to an HHS facility at Kisian, where malaria research was ongoing.

The Secretary's final visit in Africa was Kampala, Uganda.

Secretary Thompson at his first home visit with Rosemary. Rosemary is raising her four children and the three children of her brother who died of AIDS, as did her husband. She lives on $70 per month.

12/05/03 - Kampala, Uganda. In Kampala, the U.S. Delegation visited several sites. The first was a trip to rural Uganda and the Toro Province, where they saw an HHS-funded, home-based program that delivers anti-retroviral AIDS drugs to persons who without the program would otherwise die. The program used motorcycles and drivers to deliver the drugs into areas inaccessible by car. The Delegation split up into groups to visit various homes throughout the region.

12/06/03 - Kampala, Uganda. The next visit in Kampala was to the TASO Center (an AIDS Support Organization), established in 1987. It is the first indigenous non-governmental organization in Africa to respond to the needs of people living with HIV/AIDS. At the Center, Pfizer dedicated a recently completed pediatric ward of the Mulago Hospital.

12/06/03 - Kampala, Uganda. The final visit in Kamapla was to the Mildmay/JaJa's House Center. The Mildmay Center is a faith-based organization that provides a full range of services to those with HIV/AIDS, including children.

12/06/03 - Kampala, Uganda. On the last stop in Uganda, the U.S. Delegation visited the Ugandan Viral Research Institute (UVRI), a facility funded in part by HHS.

12/06/03 - Frankfurt, Germany. The U.S. Delegation left Uganda at midnight on Saturday, September 6, and arrived in Frankfurt, Germany, on Sunday, December 7, at 8:00 am. This marked the end of the official trip.
