Copyrights and Permission for Using Images from Service Web Pages

Most of the images on our Web pages are in the "public domain" (which means they have no copyright restrictions). If an image on our Web site is not restricted and does not say it is copyrighted, then you can assume it is in the public domain. You may download and use those copyright-free images in your print and electronic publications. There's no fee to pay (i.e., they're free), and no need to get permission from the Service for reusing them. As indicated in our Copyright Statement, permission is not needed to link to the Service's Web pages either.

- On rare occasions the Service's Web pages will include copyrighted images (see example). The creator of those images has granted permission to the Service to use those images, but those copyrighted images are not automatically available for use by others. If you want to download and use those copyrighted images, the photographer/artist - not the Service - will have to grant you authorization. In many cases, there may be a license fee associated with use of such images.

- Some images, such as the official logos, are restricted and may not be used on non-Service publications or Web sites without permission.

- Even images in the public domain may acknowledge the artist or identify the source - for example, Credit: US Fish and Wildlife Service, Robert Wilson). This does not automatically mean the image is copyrighted. Look for a copyright notice to determine if an image is not in the public domain.

- Do not assume every image on a printed publication from the Service is in the public domain. In many cases, the Service purchased the rights to use those photographs and drawings just for that one publication. Reuse by others requires separate authorizations from the photographers/artists, before you may scan their copyrighted products from a printed copy.
