The USGS Infoseek search engine is easy to use. These tips will help you search through the world of information available on USGS Web sites. When your search is completed, remember to scroll down to view the selected matches.

  • Search terms in lowercase to match words in any case.
  • Use upper case where appropriate for an exact match.
  • Identify phrases with quotation marks and separate by commas.
  • Use the minus sign ( - ) to eliminate selections.
  • Use the plus sign (+) to require a certain context. (for example: volcano + Hawaii brings up USGS volcano information only if it pertains to Hawaii)
