Official Map and Guide

Visiting Agate Fossil Beds

Besides protecting the fossil beds, the national monument forms an island preserve within a sea of sparsely settled ranchland; occasional windmills and cattle dot the horizon. The shortgrass prairie and marshland along the Niobrara River also harbor a rich animal and bird life. Wildflowers splash color across the hills in the spring. In all seasons the windswept North American prairies are reflected in the quiet beauty of vast sky and rolling land.

Interpretive Trials. Two interpretive trails guide you to the location of important fossil discoveries. The Fossil Hills Trail, two miles long and an hour hike, leads from the visitor center to University and Carnegie hills where most of the fossil digging was done in the early years of the 20th century. The Daemonelix-Devil's Corkscrew-Trail is close to the junction of River Road and Neb. 29. This one-mile trail leads to the fossilized corkscrew burrows of the small beaver, Palaeocastor
