Budget Overview

An independent, nonpartisan federal institution, the United States Institute of Peace was established in 1984 by Congress to promote the prevention, management, and peaceful resolution of international conflicts. From its inception, the Institute has made critical contributons to the advancement of U.S. foreign policy and become an internationally recognized authority on international conflict management and resolution.

As a federally funded institution, the Institute must submit a budget to Congress for each fiscal year (running from October through September of the following year). This document details the Institute's goals, objectives, and funding requirements for the coming fiscal year.


Budget Documents

To assist those interested in learning more about the Institute and its current programmatic priorities, resources on the Institute's current (FY 2005) budget request are provided below. For additional information on the President of the United States' overall FY 2005 budget request for the entire federal government, please visit the Office of Management and Budget's web site. Additional information on pending appropriations bills in Congress can be found by visiting the THOMAS web site operated by the Library of Congress.

  • FY 2005 Budget Request. Each February the Institute submits a budget request to Congress. This document represents the Institute's budget request for funding in FY 2005 (October 1, 2004 through September 30, 2005).

  • FY 2005 Budget in Brief. This is a summary of the Institute's budget request for FY 2005.

About Institute Activities

Addressing the needs of educators, students, scholars, practitioners, and the public to understand the complexities of international conflicts and approaches to peace and conflict resolution, the Institute’s research, education, and professional training programs are a vital dimension of American education and international diplomacy. The Institute also actively works in a nonpartisan fashion to support the Congress, White House, and policymakers throughout the U.S. government on international conflict resolution matters that affect U.S. education and training and policy.
