Discover Your Opportunities! Before Beginning a FAFSA Filling Out a FAFSA FAFSA Follow-Up

Time to Complete

The Department of Education estimates that for first-time users, FAFSA on the Web will take you less than one hour to complete. It takes less time to complete a Renewal FAFSA on the Web and Corrections on the Web.

Time-Saving Tips:

  • Plan ahead - Gather information required like your Social Security Number, driver's license, income tax return and investment records before you begin. For a complete listing of the required documents you will need to complete the FAFSA, see Documents Needed.

  • See a preview - Print a Pre-Application Worksheet to see how the application is organized; get your parents to provide you with the information requested of them (if you are a dependent student).

  • Fill out the application one step at a time - Save the FAFSA you're working on whenever you want; complete and submit it later at your convenience. (The information you save will be secure and available for you to retrieve and edit for 45 days after which it will be deleted, and you will have to start a new application.)
