TVA Meets Record Power Demand

July 14, 2004

TVA met an all-time record power demand on Tuesday, July 13, as hot summer temperatures increased power use across the Tennessee Valley.

The peak power demand reached 29,878 megawatts at 6 p.m. EDT with an average temperature of 92 degrees across the Valley.

“The delivery of a record-breaking amount of power is evidence of the commitment of the men and women of TVA and our distributor partners to provide affordable, reliable power to homes and businesses in the Tennessee Valley,” said TVA Chairman Glenn McCullough Jr. “All of the available generating units at TVA’s coal, nuclear, hydro, combustion turbine, pumped-storage and renewable energy plants, and the transmission system contributed to the outstanding performance of our power system.”

The previous all-time record was 29,866 megawatts, which TVA met on Jan. 24, 2003 when temperatures across the Valley averaged 6 degrees. The previous summer peak was 29,344 megawatts on Aug. 17,2000.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve approximately 8.5 million consumers in seven southeastern states.
