Pickwick State Park Marina Certified as Clean Marina

Pickwick State Park Marina will soon fly a Clean Marina flag in recognition of the marina’s efforts to preserve and protect water quality in the Tennessee River system.

In a ceremony during the Tennessee River Run Festival, a certificate and flag will be presented to marina manager Ron Kouri at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18. It is the first state park marina in Tennessee to receive the clean marina designation. The marina is located on Pickwick Reservoir near Pickwick Dam.

“Pickwick State Park has implemented innovative measures to handle boat sewage as part of its efforts to meet Clean Marina standards,” said Damien Simbeck, TVA’s Clean Marina coordinator for Pickwick Reservoir. “As a nodischarge marina, the release of treated or untreated sewage within harbor limits is prohibited.

“Most recently, the marina installed an oil recycling center that will be available, not only to the boaters at the marina, but also to all area residents,” Simbeck said.

Other efforts leading to Clean Marina certification include safe fuel management techniques and providing educational information and learning opportunities for boaters. Clean marina programs help marinas protect water quality by encouraging marina-sponsored boater education and reducing water pollution and erosion.

Currently, more than two dozen marinas in the Tennessee Valley have achieved the high environmental standards required for Clean Marina certification. A list of certified marinas is available here.
