TVA Director Bill Baxter to Lead 2002 Combined Federal Campaign

August 26, 2002

TVA Director Bill Baxter has been named chairman of the 2002 Smoky Mountain Region Combined Federal Campaign, held annually to give federal employees an opportunity to contribute to charitable, health, and human service organizations.

This year’s campaign will begin September 6, with federal agencies completing their campaigns in October and November. As chairman, Baxter will oversee the 24-county Smoky Mountain Region CFC spanning East Tennessee and parts of Kentucky and Virginia. The campaign theme is “Be a Hero.”

“Federal employees have a great tradition of being generous givers,” said Baxter. “This past year has reminded us all of the importance of remembering others. I know that the 2002 CFC will have special meaning and great success.”

The 2001 Smoky Mountain Region CFC resulted in gifts of more than $676,527 to charitable and service organizations – a 6.1 percent increase over the campaign goal of $634,527.

Since 1996, Smoky Mountain CFC gifts have totaled more than $3,634,853. Funds raised through approximately 408 CFCs nationwide support more than 1,787 local, national, and international charitable agencies.

The Local Federal Coordinating Committee, whose members are from participating federal agencies, directs the regional campaign. Suzan Bowman, TVA, chairs the LFCC. Other members are Patricia Howse-Smith, U.S. Department of Energy; George Major, U.S. Postal Service; Suzanne Markil, U.S. Housing and Urban Development; Judy McCarter, Federal Bureau of Investigation; Sandra McClellan, U.S. Social Security Administration; Jerry McDuffie, National Weather Service; Diane Simpson, Cumberland Gap National Historic Park; and Lt. Col. Chris Wright, U.S. Army.
