TVA Combined Federal Campaign Kicks Off September 6

September 5 , 2002

Knoxville-area TVA employees will kick off the 2002 Combined Federal Campaign Friday, September 6, with a goal of raising $390,000 from employee contributions.

TVA Director Bill Baxter, chairman of the Smoky Mountain Region CFC, will kick off the campaign at 7:30 a.m. at a breakfast for employees on the plaza between the TVA towers. Several hundred employees and retirees are expected to attend.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. executives from TVA and other Knoxville federal agencies as well as local businesses will cook and sell hot dogs on Market Square for “Downtown United for United Way.” TVA’s executive chef will be Chief Operating Officer Ike Zeringue. TVA CFC kick-off activities will wind up at 7 p.m. with a meal for second-shift employees.

“TVA employees and retirees have been known for their generosity in previous years, and this year’s CFC campaign will continue that tradition. Giving to these United Way agencies helps us give back to the communities that we live in. In addition, TVA employees are supporting several Knoxville charities by volunteering on September 11 for the National Day of Caring,” said Baxter.

The CFC is held annually to give federal employees an opportunity to contribute to charitable, health, and human service organizations.

The 2002 Smoky Mountain Region CFC will continue through October 18. Last year, TVA employees contributed $477,205—a 27 percent increase over the campaign goal of $375,000. Since 1995, the TVA Smoky Mountain Region CFC has raised more than $3,000,000.

TVA CFC co-chairs this year are Rose Sexton, manager of TVA Police Business Services, and Ray Asbury, information services decision support for Human Resource Systems. Baxter is both the Smoky Mountain Region and Knoxville TVA executive campaign manager, and he is a member of the United Way Executive Cabinet.

The Smoky Mountain region includes federal employees in 22 counties in East Tennessee, one county in Kentucky, and one county in Virginia.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power producer, and its power system is self-financed. It provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve 8.3 million consumers in seven Southeastern states.
