TVA to Participate in National Public Lands Day

September 18, 2002

TVA, along with local, state, and other federal agencies, will participate in the ninth annual National Public Lands Day on Saturday, September 28, a nationwide event for local volunteers to improve public lands and learn about the environment.

The event is held annually in September to encourage citizens to volunteer their time and effort on projects such as stream bank restoration, trail building, exotic plant removal, litter pickup, tree planting, and wildlife habitat improvements.

At least 70,000 volunteers are expected at 500 sites across the nation, making the event the largest volunteer, hands-on effort of its kind in the country. Last year, TVA watershed teams and volunteers spent approximately 5,278 hours enhancing TVA public lands.

“The continued growth of participation in National Public Lands Day illustrates how much Americans value their public land,” said TVA Resource Stewardship Vice President Bridgette Ellis. “TVA’s partnership in this annual event supports our commitment to environmental stewardship and improving the quality of life in the Tennessee Valley.”

National Public Lands Day began nine years ago as Public Lands Appreciation Day with 700 volunteers. The program is sponsored by the National Environmental Education and Training Foundation in Washington, D.C.

Other participating federal agencies include the Department of Defense, National Park Service, USDA Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and Fish and Wildlife Service.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power producer, and its power system is self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve 8.3 million consumers in seven southeastern states.
