TVA Seeks Volunteers to Support National Public Lands Day Cleanup

September 20, 2002

MURPHY, N.C. — TVA is seeking local volunteers to help clean up public recreation areas as part of the National Public Lands Day September 27-28.

The nationwide event is held annually each September to encourage local volunteers to improve public lands. TVA’s Hiwassee Watershed Team and more than 400 local residents collected 15,000 pounds of trash at 24 different sites last year.

This year volunteers plan to clean up several sites in the Hiwassee Watershed Area. The cleanup will be from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, September 27, and anytime on Saturday, September 28.

Volunteers are needed to pick up litter and to serve as site leaders for various areas. Suggestions for specific sites that need attention are welcome. Gloves and bags will be provided to volunteers. In case of rain, the clean-up effort will be held Friday, October 4.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power producer, and its power system is self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve 8.3 million consumers in seven southeastern states.
