TVA Employees to Remember September 11

Sept. 9, 2002

Knoxville-area TVA employees will remember September 11 by working at local agencies that benefit from Combined Federal Campaign contributions as part of a Knoxville-wide Day of Caring. They will also conduct a food and clothing drive to benefit those in need.

More than 100 TVA employees are expected to participate in the United Way Day of Caring activities.

Four United Way agencies in East Tennessee have been chosen as TVA Day of Caring sites. TVA employees, including TVA Board members, will help with a variety of work chores, including painting, cleaning, landscaping and light construction work at Columbus Homes, Knoxville; Tanasi Girl Scout Camp, Andersonville; Pathways Shelter, Harriman; and Kingswood School, Bean Station.

A food and clothing drive will be held on the plaza between the TVA towers from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Clothing collected will benefit approximately 85 boys and girls, ages 12 to 18 years, living in Knox and Blount County group homes. The food drive will benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank.

TVA employees will observe September 11 with a brief ceremony at 8:30 a.m. on the plaza led by TVA Chairman Glenn McCullough and Director Skila Harris. Employees will take part in the national moment of silence at 8:46 a.m.

“TVA is proud to be a part of the September 11 tribute in Knoxville,” said TVA Director Bill Baxter, Smoky Mountain Region CFC chairman. “For this special day, TVA employees have donated their time and energy to assisting local communities. This is a day to remember those who lost their lives and those heroes who have served our country.”

The Combined Federal Campaign is held annually to give federal employees an opportunity to contribute to charitable organizations. More than 1,700 charitable, health, and human service agencies serving people nationally and locally are eligible to receive CFC funds.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power producer, and its power system is self-financed. It provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve 8.3 million consumers in seven Southeastern states.
