TVA’s
Bull Run Fossil Plant Named Best in Nation
December
19, 2002
TVA’s Bull Run Fossil Plant has been named the most energy-efficient
coal-fired power plant in the nation by Electric Light and Power magazine.
The plant has been ranked among the nation’s top 10 most efficient
plants by the magazine every year since 1996.
The
utility industry magazine annually ranks the top 20 generating units
by various criteria. In the November 2002 issue covering
calendar year
2001 performance, TVA’s Bull Run Fossil Plant, located near Oak
Ridge, Tenn., won top honors for heat rate—a measure of the
efficiency with which a plant turns fuel energy into electric energy.
“This
outstanding achievement by Bull Run is the result of TVA employees’ commitment
to excellence in business performance,” says TVA Chairman Glenn
McCullough, Jr. “By operating our power plants more efficiently,
TVA continues to provide an affordable, reliable supply of electric
power to meet our customers’ needs.”
Two
other TVA coal-fired plants and two nuclear plants also scored in the
rankings by total annual generation. Cumberland Fossil Plant,
in
Central City, Tenn., placed sixth, and Paradise Fossil Plant,
in Drakesboro, Ky., ranked 18th in the nation in net generation
by coal-fired plants.
Sequoyah
Nuclear Plant, near Chattanooga, Tenn., was ranked seventh, and Browns
Ferry Nuclear Plant, near Athens, Ala., ranked 13th in
net generation by nuclear power plants.
TVA’s Cumberland Fossil Plant also placed 20th among the cleanest
coal-fired power plants when ranked by sulfur dioxide emission rates.
“There
are more than 500 coal-fired plants and 65 nuclear plants included
in the surveys,” McCullough said. “Having three fossil
plants and two of our nuclear plants in these top rankings is a credit
to the
employees at TVA.”
TVA
is the nations largest public power producer, and its power system
is self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power
distributors that serve 8.3 million consumers in seven southeastern states.
