Green Power Switch Earns 2002 Award

October 22, 2002

Green Power Switch, the TVA program that produces electricity from cleaner, greener sources, has been awarded a 2002 Federal Energy and Water Management Award.

The award from the Department of Energy and the Federal Interagency Energy Policy Committee recognizes TVA’s Green Power Switch program for its outstanding contribution to the expansion of renewable energy.

Gary Harris, Green Power Switch program manager, will accept the award on behalf of TVA in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, October 23.

“TVA is honored to receive a Federal Energy and Water Management Award,” says TVA Director Skila Harris. “The success of Green Power Switch is a result of the outstanding support it receives from distributors of TVA power and from the people of the Tennessee Valley who have made the choice to buy electricity generated from renewable sources.”

Green Power Switch, an accredited renewable energy initiative, is the largest and newest program in the federal government and in the southeastern states. Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory ranked Green Power Switch eighth in the nation for the amount of new energy produced and 10th in the nation for the number of customers participating. Currently, 47 public power companies in the TVA service area sell energy generated by solar, wind, and methane gas.

TVA provides green power from 14 solar sites throughout the TVA service area, one wind park in east Tennessee, and a landfill gas facility in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, as well as from methane gas at the Allen Fossil Plant in Memphis. Approximately 5,900 residential customers and 295 business customers are purchasing more than 19,000 blocks of green power.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power producer, and its power system is self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve 8.3 million consumers in seven southeastern states.
