TVA to Lower Level of Bear Creek Reservoir for Safety Inspection

October 22, 2002

RUSSELVILLE, Ala. – TVA will lower the water level of Bear Creek Reservoir this fall approximately 15 feet below the normal winter level to permit a special dam safety inspection of the sluiceway tunnel.

The drawdown will begin November 1 and continue until the water reaches an elevation of 550 feet above sea level around December 2.

The inspection and related work is scheduled to be completed by mid-December, and the reservoir is expected to return to normal winter levels in February 2003. The work will be done to ensure the safe operation of the dam during heavy rainfall and potential flooding.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power producer, and its power system is self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve 8.3 million consumers in seven southeastern states.
