Four Norris Reservoir Marinas Receive Clean Marina Awards

October 24, 2002

Four Tennessee marinas on Norris Reservoir will now be able to fly Clean Marina flags as a result of their actions to clean up the reservoir.

In ceremonies open to the public, flags will be presented to Ike Vanderpool, owner of Andersonville Boat Dock in Andersonville; Steve Pemberton, owner of Norris Dam Marina in Lake City; Dalan Courtney, owner of Shanghai Resort and Marina in LaFollette; and Luke Kirklin, dock master of Stardust Marina/Harbour Club in Andersonville.

The scheduled dates and times for the award presentations are:

  • October 28 – Shanghai Resort, 10 a.m. - noon; Norris Dam Marina, 2 p.m. - 4 p.m.
  • October 30 – Stardust Marina/Harbour Club, 10 a.m. - noon; Andersonville Boat Dock, 2 p.m. - 4 p.m.

“To receive this designation, marinas must meet all federal, state, and local regulations related to marina management,” says TVA Clean Marina Coordinator Linda Harris. “They must also implement a number of recommended practices to minimize pollution and encourage boaters to become effective stewards of water resources.”

All four marinas have undergone a complete transformation of their business operations, Harris said. They have voluntarily sought innovative measures to handle boat sewage; they employ safe fuel management techniques, including having a current Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasures plan; and they provide educational information and learning opportunities for boaters.

The Clean Marina certifications are being presented in concert with TVA’s involvement in the Year of Clean Water. Congress, a number of the nation’s governors, and national organizations have proclaimed 2002 the Year of Clean Water. This month marks the 30th anniversary of the enactment of the Clean Water Act.
