TVA Reviews Project to Reduce Emissions at Paradise Fossil Plant

December 11, 2002

DRAKESBORO, Ky. – TVA has completed a draft environmental assessment of the upcoming project to install pollution-control equipment at Paradise Fossil Plant, which will further reduce emissions and improve air quality.

The environmental assessment examines the potential impacts of the installation and operation of the new pollution-control equipment. TVA plans to install and operate a new scrubber on Unit 3 at Paradise that will improve air quality and provide more than 300 temporary construction jobs and 40 permanent jobs.

Work on the project is scheduled to begin next year. Annual emissions at the Paradise plant have dropped from about 500,000 tons in 1974 to 100,000 tons in 2001. TVA currently uses a blend of coals to lower sulfur dioxide emissions from Unit 3. TVA installed scrubbers on units 1 and 2 at Paradise in the mid 1980s.

The TVA Board last month approved a contract with Advatech LLC to spend up to $1.5 billion over eight years to install five scrubbers at four fossil plants, including Paradise. New scrubbers will also be installed at plants in Alabama and Tennessee.

Copies of the draft environmental assessment are available at the Muhlenberg County Public Library, Greenville, Ky; Bowling Green Public Library, Bowling Green, Ky; Nashville Public Library, Nashville, Tenn.; and the Louisville Free Public Library, Louisville, Ky. The document can also be viewed on TVA’s Environmental Reports page.
