TVA Energy Sourcebooks Now Available on the Web

December 20, 2002

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Valley science teachers have a new way to help teach students about energy and the environment. They can now simply point and click, courtesy of TVA and its power distributors.

TVA and its power partners have developed an electronic version of the Energy Sourcebook, an energy education teaching tool for elementary, middle, and high school teachers.

The Energy Sourcebook, developed by TVA and distributors of TVA power in the late ’80s, has been used by hundreds of educators to teach students how electric energy is produced, distributed, and used. The Sourcebook also helps students explore alternative energy sources and become better aware of ways to protect the environment and natural resources.

“The Sourcebook series was developed by TVA energy specialists working with Valley teachers and university staff,” says TVA Vice President of Marketing Jim Keiffer. “All the learning activities offered in the materials were kid-tested in schools throughout the Valley and coordinated with state departments of education to ensure compliance with accepted learning concepts.”

The Energy Sourcebook materials are endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Clearinghouse for Educational Resources. The Sourcebook series won the Environmental Protection Agency’s Administrator’s Award for “outstanding efforts in the field of pollution prevention” in 1992.

The new electronic format is available on disc or through TVA’s newest Web site, www.tvakids.com.

“This new format will make it much easier for teachers to access and use the materials with their students,” says Keiffer. “We appreciate the support of the distributors of TVA power and state educators who have helped us create new value for this product for a new generation of students.”

Distribution for the reissue of Energy Sourcebook is now under way. The Tennessee Department of Education is distributing compact discs of the electronic Sourcebook to science teachers in the public school system in cooperation with the Tennessee Energy Education Steering Committee.

Reissue of the Sourcebook to private schools in Tennessee and public and private schools in the TVA service areas in Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia will be coordinated through participating distributors of TVA power and TVA’s regional Customer Service Centers.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power producer, and its power system is self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve 8.3 million consumers in seven southeastern states.
