TVA Energy Survey Identifies Savings for West Point School District

November 8 , 2002

WEST POINT, Miss. – Better lighting and improved climate control at a lower cost will benefit students of the West Point School District this fall thanks to an energy survey conducted by TVA.

The TVA energy audit identified opportunities for the school system to save a projected $50,000 a year through energy efficiency improvements.

The audit showed ways to boost air conditioning and heating performance and increase lighting levels in classrooms, hallways, offices, media centers, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and kitchens. Exit and emergency lighting was also upgraded to comply with Life Safety Codes.

School Superintendent Dr. Randy Hamblin requested the energy audit through the City of West Point Electric System. “We are pleased to work with TVA on this project that will improve the energy management of West Point schools,” said Hamblin. “These improvements will enhance the learning environment for students while saving money on energy costs. Some of the money saved through energy efficiency can be applied to educational needs.”

In the audit, TVA Energy Services staff examined 13 buildings covering approximately 600,000 square feet. “This is another example of the partnership between West Point Electric System and TVA,” said City of West Point Chief Administrative Officer Dewel Brasher. “Working together, we are able to provide technical assistance to look at all energy options and make recommendations to our customers.”

TVA’s Energy Services division works with distributors of TVA power to help get the most from their utility budgets. Actions include implementing new and more efficient heating and energy management techniques and technology, which are funded by utility bill savings.

“TVA is committed to promoting energy efficiency throughout the Tennessee Valley,” said Al Nayadley, project manager for TVA’s Energy Services group. “We are proud to work with Dr. Hamblin and the West Point School District on this project to cut energy costs for the schools.”

TVA is the nation’s largest public power producer, and its power system is self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve 8.3 million consumers in seven southeastern states.
