NOTE: On January 24, 2003, ATF's law enforcement functions were transferred to the Department of Justice (DOJ), and ATF became the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). ATF's Strategic Plan is currently being revised to reflect the agency's new name and mission and function within DOJ. The new plan will be posted upon DOJ's approval.

Mission

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is a law enforcement organization within the United States Department of Justice with unique responsibilities dedicated to reducing violent crime and protecting the public.

ATF enforces the federal laws and regulations relating to alcohol, tobacco, firearms, explosives and arson by working directly and in cooperation with others to:

bullet Suppress and prevent crime and violence through enforcement, regulation, and community outreach.

bullet Ensure fair and proper revenue collection. Provide fair and effective industry regulation.

bullet Support and assist federal, state, local, and international law enforcement.

bullet Provide innovative training programs in support of criminal and regulatory enforcement functions.

Vision

ATF . . .
Working for a Sound and Safer America . . .
Through Innovation and Partnerships

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) must respond to the public outcry against crime, violence, and other threats to public safety. We must also continue to do our part to maintain the economic stability of the country. Our vision will help us chart the course to change the way we serve the public and achieve new levels of effectiveness and teamwork.

"More than ever, the success or failure of a Federal agency will be determined by the value it brings to the American public. If we continue to become a better, faster, and more effective organization, ATF will thrive and the American public will benefit."

Bradley A. Buckles, December 1999

Values

We value each other and those we serve.

We will:

bullet Set and uphold the highest standards of excellence and integrity;

bullet Provide quality service and promote strong external partnerships; and

bullet Develop a diverse, innovative, and well-trained work force in order to collectively achieve our goals.
