State Fire Marshals

On August 24, 1998, the Federal Register published a final rule in which ATF amended several sections of the Federal explosives regulations found in 27 CFR Part 55. Among the changes is the requirement for any person storing explosive material to notify the authority having jurisdiction for fire safety in the locality in which the explosive materials are being stored. The notification should include the type, magazine capacity, and location of each site where such explosive materials are stored. Such notification shall be made orally before the end of the day on which storage of the explosive materials commenced and in writing within 48 hours from the time such storage commenced. The authority having jurisdiction for fire safety is defined as "the fire department having jurisdiction over sites where explosives are manufactured or stored."

The following web site is provided as an effort to assist individuals in determining who the local authority having jurisdiction for fire safety is for their area.
