County Typology Codes
To provide policy-relevant information about diverse county conditions to policymakers, public officials, and researchers, ERS has developed a new set of county-level typology codes that captures differences in economic and social characteristics. This release revises the preliminary codes released in May 2004.

The 2004 County Typology Codes were developed for all 3,141 counties, county equivalents, and independent cities in the United States. Their primary function is to help differentiate among nonmetro counties, but metro counties are also coded to facilitate comparisons.

The 2004 County Typology codes classify all U.S. counties according to six non-overlapping categories of economic dependence and seven overlapping categories of policy-relevant themes. The economic types include farming, mining, manufacturing, services, Federal/State government, and unspecialized counties. The policy types include housing stress, low-education, low-employment, persistent poverty, population loss, nonmetro recreation, and retirement destination.

A preliminary version of these codes was released on the ERS website in May 2004. This is the final version and includes revised farming-dependent counties, along with five economic types that have not previously been released. More information on the revised farming-dependent counties can be found here http://www.ers.usda.gov/briefing/rurality/typology/. The policy types remain unchanged from the May 2004 release.

Foodborne Illness Cost Calculator
This interactive web-based tool allows users to estimate the cost of foodborne disease, using a variety of assumptions about the costs of treating foodborne illness, the value of lost productivity and premature death, and the number of cases of disease. There are several different approaches to determining the costs associated with illness - and several different approaches are used by Federal food safety regulators. The Foodborne Illness Cost Calculator allows users to examine the assumptions behind the different approaches and to perform a side-by-side comparison of the cost estimates generated by each approach. The goal of the Foodborne Illness Cost Model is to make the calculations behind Federal Cost-Benefit and Regulatory Impact Analyses more transparent and to improve food safety policy.

How Much Do Americans Pay for Fruits and Vegetables?
In this data product, ERS has calculated total pounds or pints purchased at retail, total dollars spent, average retail price, serving size, servings per pound or pint, and dollars per serving for each form of 57 fruits and vegetables. This collection of spreadsheets contain all the data used in the report and are presented to show exactly how ERS arrived at the costs per serving figures. Each table also includes a short narrative that complements the statistics for each fruit and vegetable, detailing the nutritional benefits of each fruit and vegetable and divulging little known facts (or trivia) as well. This information should provide users with a clearer understanding of the costs of produce, the nutrient density of most fruits and vegetables, and their contributions to a healthy diet.

The Rural Indicators Map Machine is an internet-based mapping utility that provides a visualization of indicators for rural areas used by and available from ERS. The browser consists of an interactive map and tools to further examine the data and to get information about the features on the map, move to different geographic extents, and change data layers. These indicators include the Natural amenities scale, the Rural typology code, the Urban influnce code, the Rural-urban continuum codes, and the Rural-urban commuting area codes.
November 1, 2001

Rural-Urban Commuting Area Codes
Rural-urban commuting area code (RUCA) classifies U.S. census tracts using measures of urbanization, population density, and daily commuting from the 1990 decennial census. The classification contains two levels. Whole numbers (1-10) delineate metropolitan, large town, small town, and rural commuting areas based on the size and direction of the tracts' largest commuting flows. These 10 codes are further subdivided to permit stricter or looser delimitation of metropolitan and nonmetropolitan settlement, based on secondary commuting flows. The approach errs in the direction of more codes, so as to provide maximum flexibility for the selective combination of codes that will meet varying definitional needs and preferences.
May 1, 2001

Rural/Urban Continuum Codes
The Rural-urban Continuum Codes allow researchers working with county data to break such data into finer residential groups beyond a simple metro-nonmetro dichotomy, particularly for the analysis of trends in nonmetro areas that may be related to degree of rurality and metro proximity. The codes form a classification scheme that distinguishes metropolitan (metro) counties by the population size of their metro area, and nonmetropolitan (nonmetro) counties by degree of urbanization and adjacency to a metro area or areas. The metro and nonmetro categories have been subdivided into three metro and six nonmetro groupings, resulting in a nine-part county codification. Data available for 2003, 1993, 1983 and 1974.

State Export Data
Annual estimates of U.S. exports by State and commodity group based on each States' share of U.S. agricultural production. These ERS estimates are based on two key sources of data. Export data are national-level Foreign Agricultural Trade of the United States (FATUS) data from USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service, which are not separable by State. ERS also uses State-level historical production data from USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service to determine State export shares for U.S. crops and livestock. Using these approximations, a State that is the largest producer of an agricultural commodity will also account for the largest share of U.S. exports of that commodity. Compared with other estimates, these estimates of State of export origin tend to be more accurate for agricultural commodities and do not inflate the relative exports from port States or undercount those of inland States.
June 29, 2004

State Fact Sheets
The ERS State Fact Sheets contain frequently requested data for each state and for the total United States. These include current data on population, per-capita income, earnings per job, poverty rates, employment, unemployment, farm and farm-related jobs, farm characteristics, farm financial characteristics, top agricultural commodities, top export commodities, and the top counties in agricultural sales.

The ERS State Fact Sheets have been updated to include new data from the 2002 Census of Agriculture. You can now examine farm characteristics from the last three Censuses (1992, 1997, and 2002). Additional data has been added on land, organic farming, and farm operators.

Urban Influence Codes
ERS announces the release of the 2003 Urban Influence Codes, which classify U.S. counties by size of each county’s largest town and nearness to metropolitan and micropolitan areas. This scheme allows researchers to break county data down into smaller residential groups than metro, micro, and nonmetro. This is particularly useful for the analysis of trends in nonmetro areas that are related to population density and metro influence. The codes divide the Nation's 3,141 counties, county equivalents, and independent cities into 12 groups.

WTO Agricultural Trade Policy Commitments Database
At the conclusion of the Uruguay Round of multilateral trade negotiations in 1995, members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) established a broad set of rules and disciplines in the Agreement on Agriculture, governing three key areas affecting agricultural trade policy: domestic support, export subsidies, and market access. This database contains data on implementation of agricultural policy commitments by WTO members. Export subsidy data indicate the type of export subsidies, expenditures on export subsidies, and the quantity of subsidized exports during a given year by WTO members. Domestic support data detail the type and amount of support WTO members have provided annually. Market access data contain information on tariff commitments and their implementation by presenting bound tariff levels and tariff-rate quotas agreed to in the Uruguay Round, as well as applied annual tariff rates (i.e., the tariff rates published by national customs authorities for duty administration purposes).
