The Air Force in cooperation with the State of California, the Nature Conservancy and the other Coastal America partners are collaborating on this project, which addresses the Air Forces's environmental policy of protecting the environment and enhancing the country's natural resources, including its coastal resource, in cooperation with local community interests. The project will gather baseline data on sea otter and pinniped populations on Vandenberg AFB and from this data create a marine mammal management plan. Little baseline data is currently available on marine mammals utilizing sections of Vandenberg's coastline for pupping and haul out. By studying Vandenberg's marine mammals and comparing data with ongoing studies in adjacent areas, Vandenberg can provide valuable information on understanding how these populations migrate along the coast. The base is in need for further information on numbers of mammals and their habitat requirements in order to properly assess potential mission impacts and to improve preservation where possible and enhance habitat.
Reverse possible habitat degradation and loss.
