Center for Industrial Sensors and Measurements (CISM) Develops new sensors for industrial sensing application in hostile environments More information is available at www.cism.ohio-state.edu National Science Foundation (NSF)-State/Industry/University Cooperative Research Centers (S/I/UCRC) Ohio State University The Center was established to develop new sensors for industrial sensing application in hostile environments and, through technology transfer and education, increase competitiveness of member companies, enhance the training level or practicing engineers, and prepare future engineers and scientists in the multi-disciplinary field of sensor development and application. CISM's mission is to provide leadership, focus, and direction in the development of novel materials and micro-fabrication approaches for sensors and sensor systems in hostile environments. CISM research has three primary research thrust areas: (1) polymer sensors and devices for biomedical applications, (2) ceramic sensors and devices for industrial process control and environmental pollution monitoring and (3) smart systems involving sensor arrays ("electronic nose" for ceramic sensors and "electronic tongue" for polymeric sensors) integrated with artificial intelligence and pattern recognition. Research teams include students and faculty from Departments of Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science and Engineering, and Computer, Electrical, Chemical and Mechanical Engineering. The CISM activities are targeted to achieve the following goals and objectives. - Foster interdisciplinary research and education in non-silicon sensor approaches - Provide application expertise for sensors in hostile industrial and biomedical applications (automotive, aerospace, biomedical, power & utility, materials processing, etc.) - Foster local and regional entrepreneurial activity around CISM developed sensors and sensor systems - Transfer sensor technology into the commercial sector - Become the world's leading center in non-Si approaches to sensing in harsh environments.
