ALMA R. CANDELARIA
Deputy Executive Director
for the House
Alma R. Candelaria was appointed by the Chair
of the Board of the Office of Compliance to serve a five-year term
as Deputy Executive Director for the House in September 2001.
Prior to joining the Office of Compliance, Ms.
Candelaria served as the Senior Advisor to the Associate Deputy
Administrator for Management and Administration at the U.S. Small
Business Administration. From 1993 through 1999, Ms. Candelaria
worked at the U.S. Department of Labor, first as a Senior Legislative
Officer with the Office of Congressional and Intergovernmental Affairs
and as Chief of Staff to the Director of the Women's Bureau. During
her tenure at DOL, legislative victories included amendments to
the Fair Labor Standard Act, successful implementation of the Family
and Medical Leave Act, legislative reform and oversight of labor
protective programs for transportation workers, oversight and outreach
on equal employment opportunity programs as administered by DOL
for government contractors, strengthened pension rights and a variety
of educational efforts to increase worker's rights and responsibilities.
Other key positions include Legislative Assistant
to former Congressman Esteban E. Torres (CA-34), Director of Leadership
Development and Government Affairs at the National Association of
Latino Elected and Appointed Officials and Programs Director with
the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. In each of these positions,
Ms. Candelaria honed her skills in the public policy making process.
Ms. Candelaria brings with her a unique blend of experience from
the legislative, executive and advocacy organization perspective.
Ms. Candelaria received her Bachelor of Arts
degree in political science (cum laude) from the University of California,
Santa Barbara. She lives in Washington, D.C.
