Executive Director

William W. Thompson, II was appointed by the Board of Directors of the Office of Compliance to the position of Executive Director in March, 2001. Mr. Thompson graduated cum laude from Amherst College in 1969, and earned his Juris Doctor from Columbia University School of Law in 1973.

Prior to his appointment as Executive Director, Mr. Thompson served as the President and a principal stockholder of the Washington, DC and Northern Virginia law firm of Zwerdling, Paul, Leibig, Kahn, Thompson & Wolly, PC. With Zwerdling, Paul since 1986, Mr. Thompson represented not-for-profit employers, Federal sector, public sector and private sector employees and employee organizations throughout the United States. Among his wide range of clients were the Joint Council of Unions of the U.S. Government Printing Office, a number of local government employee organizations, the United Auto Workers, affiliates of the Newspaper Guild, and railroad craft unions. He has been active in the negotiation of collective bargaining agreements, interest arbitration and mediation, and has litigated a full range of traditional labor and employment law disputes in Federal and State courts, as well as before the National Labor Relations Board, the Federal Labor Relations Board, the Merit Systems Protections Board, and other administrative tribunals.

At the request of the NAFTA Labor Commission, Mr. Thompson provided comment and edits for the Commission's recent monograph, Labor Protective Provisions in North America. Mr. Thompson has also served as the Washington investigator for the Office of the Election Administrator, the agency that enforces election fairness requirements mandated for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

From 1981 to 1986, Mr. Thompson was a principal stockholder with Paul and Thompson, PC, a labor and employment firm in Arlington, VA. Previously, he served as General Counsel for the American Federation of School Administrators, and was responsible for the overall legal policies, institutional defense, and litigation strategies of that national organization of education managers and supervisors.

A native of Washington, DC, Mr. Thompson and his family reside in Montgomery County, Maryland.
