General Counsel

Peter Eveleth was appointed by the Board of Directors of the Office of Compliance to the position of General Counsel for a five-year term commencing June 2003. Prior to his appointment, Mr. Eveleth served as Senior Special Counsel to the General Counsel of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) since 1994. In that capacity, he advised the General Counsel, Board Members, and senior management officials, principally with respect to internal labor and employment relations matters. Mr. Eveleth represented the NLRB in litigation before administrative agencies, including MSPB, FLRA, EEOC, arbitrators, and federal courts. He was also instrumental in NLRB efforts to develop and implement alternative dispute resolution practices, serving as the agency’s designated Dispute Resolution Specialist. During his career with the NLRB, Mr. Eveleth also served in various positions including Assistant General Counsel of the Contempt Litigation Branch, the office responsible for assuring nationwide compliance with court-enforced NLRB orders.

Prior to 1994, Mr. Eveleth was Of Counsel to the Washington Office of Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer and Feld where he represented management clients in a broad range of labor and employment matters arising under the NLRA, RLA, ADA, WARN Act, OSH Act and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

As an Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University Law Center, he taught a course in equal employment opportunity law. Previously, he taught at Indiana University School of Law.

Mr. Eveleth is a graduate of Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations (special studies honors program). He earned his Juris Doctor (cum laude) from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He is admitted to practice in New York and the District of Columbia, and resides in Washington, D.C.
