Upcoming Conferences/Meetings/Workshops

March 17 – FIC hosts “A Middle Eastern Roundtable Discussion on Women and Science,”  as part of series honoring Women’s History Month.  Lawton Chiles International House (Stone House) on the NIH campus.

April 22-23  The 5th  Global Forum on Bioethics in Research will take place in Paris, hosted by INSERM.  The topics will center on intellectual property issues in health research.  A tentative agenda has been constructed, including case studies of genetic databases, uses of medicinal plants from indigenous communities, and community representation in research and IP activities, and benefit sharing. Sponsors of the meeting include NIH (FIC and NIEHS),  CDC, The UK MRC, The Wellcome Trust, and The Rockefeller Foundation.

April 27.  FIC, ORWH and CIHR convene science funding agencies, including partners across NIH, to consider Gender, Sex, and Global Health. To be scheduled in spring – “Science at NIH – a Day for the Diplomatic Corps.”

, Esther and Sidney Rabb Professor of Anthropology, Harvard
University, Professor of Medical Anthropology and Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard
University will give a lecture on "The Global Epidemic of Mental Health Problems in Developing Countries: Depression, Suicide, and Violence on Monday September 22 @ 3:00 p.m. in Masur Auditorium, NIH (Building 10).

Fifth FIC 35th Anniversary Global Health Lecture  
Dr. Gail Cassell
, Vice President, Scientific Affairs and Distinguished Lilly Research 
Scholar for Infectious Diseases, Eli Lilly and Company will give a Lecture on "Global 
Health Inequities and the Critical Role of Public/Private Partnerships: Challenges and 
Opportunities in the Next Decade" on Thursday, June 12 at 3:00 p.m. in Masur Auditorium, 
NIH (Building 10). 

Fourth FIC 35th Anniversary Global Health Lecture
Sir David Weatherall
, FRS, Regius Professor of Medicine and Director Weatherall Institute 
of Molecular Medicine, Emeritus, University of Oxford will give a Lecture in the NHGRI 
Symposium, "From Double Helix to Human Sequence -- and beyond" on Tuesday, April 15 
at 4:30 p.m., Building 45, Natcher Conference Center, NIH (Building 10).

Third FIC 35th Anniversary Global Health Lecture
Dr. Alan Lopez
will give a lecture entitled "Global Health Priorities: Diseases, Injuries and Risk Factors" on Tuesday, April 8 @ 3:00 p.m.  in Masur Auditorium, NIH (Building 10). 

Second Fogarty International Center 35th Anniversary Global Health Lecture
Dr. D.A. Henderson
gave a lecture entitled “Dreams and Realities in Disease Eradication,” on 
Tuesday, January 28 at 3:00 p.m. in Masur Auditorium, Building 10.  This lecture is the second in 
the FIC 35th Anniversary Lecture Series.  Dr. Henderson is Distinguished Service Professor at 
Johns Hopkins University and Director of Research and Development for the Office of Public Health 
Emergency Preparedness.

First Fogarty International Center Thirty-fifth Anniversary Global Health Lecture
Dr. Nevin Scrimshaw, institute professor emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and senior advisor for the food and nutrition programme at the United Nations University, delivered the second annual David Barmes Global Health lecture on Monday, October 28 at 3:30 p.m. in Masur Auditorium, Building 10. 

The Third MIM Pan-African Conference on Malaria, November 17-22, 2002
The Multilateral Initiative on Malaria (MIM) will hold the Third MIM Pan-African Conference on Malaria in Arusha, Tanzania in November 2002.  The conference will focus on scientific progress and potential in malaria research with the aim of promoting the exchange of scientific ideas within Africa.  The conference will have specific sessions to discuss mechanisms for linking scientific research and malaria control activities. Conference organizers are the National Institute for Medical Research (Tanzania) and the MIM Secretariat, Fogarty International Center (USA) in collaboration with other agencies worldwide.
