Double Murder Suspect ID'd by Computer - I
Listen with Realplayer

Mr. Schiff: Another notch in the belt of the FBI's Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System, IAFIS. It's in West Virginia and identified someone arrested in Richmond, Virginia, after his prints were sent to the FBI...

Mr. Kirkpatrick: "Within seven minutes, that individual was identified as being wanted in connection with two separate homicides in Pennsylvania."

Mr. Schiff: That's Mike Kirkpatrick, Assistant Director of the FBI's Criminal Justice Information Services Division, who says when the subject's fingerprints came in, the computer began scanning and searching...

Mr. Kirkpatrick: "The fingerprint identification results are then returned to the arresting agency within minutes."

Mr. Schiff: Kirkpatrick says more than one report was sent...

Mr. Kirkpatrick: "In this instance, where the individual was also a wanted person, we also electronically notified agencies who had arrest warrants outstanding on him."

Mr. Schiff: There are more than 47,000,000 million fingerprints on file in IAFIS. I'm Neal Schiff and that's what's happening at the "FBI, This Week."
