Welcome!

Doing business in the Caribbean?

The U.S. Commercial Service, an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce, is a global network committed to supporting U.S. commercial interests around the world. The Commercial Service offices in the Caribbean have assisted U.S. companies in exporting nearly $300 million to the region since 2002. The U.S. Commercial Service offers comprehensive, customized solutions to your international trade challenges and provides export promotion assistance through a variety of products and services.

The U.S. Commercial Service office in Santo Domingo is the regional headquarters for Commerce Department programs in the Caribbean. CS Santo Domingo manages offices in Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad & Tobago. We also work with the U.S. Embassies in the Bahamas, Guyana, Haiti and Suriname to assist U.S. companies with their business needs in those markets.

The Caribbean region contains great diversity in history, cultural heritage, and levels of economic development. There are five official languages (Creole, English, Spanish, French, Dutch) spoken in the Caribbean. The region as a whole represents a market of about 23 million people who collectively imported over $11.7 billion of U.S. goods in the year 2003. As such, the Caribbean ranks 2nd in Latin America as a destination for U.S. exports, behind only Mexico.

On August 5, 2004 the US and Dominican Republic signed a bilateral Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA_DR), which once implemented would immediately eliminate tariffs on 80% of US goods exported to the Dominican Republic.
