Why the Dominican Republic?

The United States remains a vital economic and cultural partner of the Dominican Republic, with over one million Dominicans residing in the US.

The Dominican Republic is the United States' 4th largest export market in the Western Hemisphere, the 26th commercial partner of the United States in the world, and hosts substantial U.S. foreign direct investments.

United States two-way trade with the Dominican Republic is over $8 billion annually and US exports accounted for $4.4 billion in 2003.

The economy is based on a tripod foundation of Tourism, Free Trade Zones that include over 500 companies, and remittances from the 1.5 million Dominicans that live in the US, mainly in New York, New Jersey, and Florida.

During the past two administrations, the government has increasingly adopted policies directed toward economic liberalization, including privatizing most state-owned enterprises, improving intellectual property rights protection, and working constructively in multilateral fora, such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA)and DR's recent inclusion in the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA).
