CHRONIC DISEASE PREVENTION AND HEALTH PROMOTION (CDC)

Research: CDC will support research to establish evidence-based, effective tobacco use prevention and control programs and to provide baseline data to evaluate programs. FY 2003 priorities include:

HEALTH SERVICES RESEARCH (NIH)

Research: In FY 2003, NIH funds will be used to support behavioral and prevention research in tobacco use and addiction. FY 2003 priorities include:

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) will continue research to:

The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) will continue to support projects to develop and test telephone counseling intervention to prevent smoking re- initiation in a diverse population of pregnant women. If effective, this intervention will offer a new approach to providing health services to hard-to-reach populations, as well as providing an opportunity to decrease the prevalence of women who smoke during pregnancy or return to smoking after childbirth.

Evaluation: Beginning in FY 2002, NIH will conduct the final evaluation phase for Transdisciplinary Tobacco Use Research Centers (TTURCs). A panel of evaluation experts developed a draft measurement system that was then reviewed by the TTURCs, pilot tested, and revised. The final evaluation addresses several outcomes including feasibility, efficiency, collaboration, and rigor.
