NKOSI: A
VOICE OF AFRICA’S AIDS ORPHANS
Globalvision, in
association with Videovision Entertainment and Distant Horizon, is proud to present
a poignant tribute to the life and work of the world’s youngest AIDS advocate,
Nkosi Johnson.
This half-hour program, shot in South Africa and New
York, features little Nkosi’s groundbreaking speech before thousands at the
International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa, in July 2000 where he
challenged his government’s policies on anti-retrovirals for pregnant
HIV-positive women. The government
responded to his call for a policy change.
The program also depicts Nkosi’s determination and commitment
to build an HIV care center for mothers and children with his mother Gail. It features commentary by the well-known
HIV-positive South African Judge Edwin Cameron, who opened the International
AIDS conference. It also features
remarks by South African leader Nelson Mandela.
Twelve-year-old Nkosi’s potent advocacy for the tens
of millions of other AIDS-affected children in Southern Africa less fortunate
than he put a human face on the tragedy and brought attention to this
under-examined aspect of the AIDS crisis in Africa.
Today there are more than 13 million children orphaned
because of the scourge. Thousands of
children are infected daily. Tens of thousands are heads of households. Families and support systems are
deteriorating.
Nkosi understood the importance of speaking out for
those whose voices are often ignored.
Nkosi’s crusade to end the stigma and discrimination endured by HIV/AIDS
sufferers, and keeping families affected by AIDS intact will be his legacy and
contribution to what will certainly be a defining aspect of the new millennium.
