Alternative Genders and
Sexualities in Brazil
Richard Parker, Ph.D.
This presentation will focus
on the deployment of stigma in the production and reproduction of social
inequality, with a special focus on stigmatization related to gender
non-conformity and sexual difference.
Drawing on long-term research carried out in Brazil since the early
1980s, it will examine the role of sexual stigmatization in relation to social
exclusion and discrimination in everyday life, and the impact of these social
processes in relation to health issues such as HIV and AIDS and violence. It will also examine interventions that have
been developed in response to sexual stigmatization, and the possibilities for
collective mobilization, political resistance, and rights-based activism aimed
at addressing stigma and discrimination in health promotion.
