Pablo J. Farias was appointed Representative for Mexico and Central America of the Ford Foundation in November1998.  As Representative, he is responsible for the development of the overall program of the Ford Foundation in this region, together with a staff of four Program Officers.  Grantmaking includes the fields of Governance and Civil Society, Environment and Development, Development Finance, Education Reform and Children, Youth and Families. Close to $20 million are allocated in grants annually in the Mexico and Central America region. 

 

From 1992 until joining the Ford Foundation, Dr. Farias was Director General of the College of the Southern Border (ECOSUR), a research and post-graduate training institution in southern Mexico, focused on the challenges of poverty alleviation and sustainable development in tropical rural areas.

 

He trained in medicine at the University of Monterrey, Mexico, graduating in 1981. He specialized in Psychiatry and Medical Anthropology at Harvard Medical School, where he was associated with the Department of Social Medicine.
