Paul Gaist, Ph.D., M.P.H., is a Health Scientist Administrator in the Office of AIDS Research (OAR) in the Office of the Director at the National Institutes of Health.  His work within OAR is focused primarily on the behavioral, social and prevention science aspects of HIV/AIDS, both in the United States and internationally.  In addition, he is the OAR representative for issues related to alternative and complementary medicine.

 

Dr. Gaist holds B.A. degrees in psychology and physiology from the University of California, Berkeley.  He received his Ph.D. in behavioral science research and his M.P.H. in health policy and management from Johns Hopkins University (JHU).  He is currently on faculty at the JHU Bloomberg School of Public Health as an adjunct Assistant Professor.

 

Previously, Dr. Gaist has served as a senior policy advisor to the White House Office of National AIDS Policy; was the Deputy Director for HIV/AIDS at the Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Administration; and was director of an intramural research program at the National Institute for Mental Health, studying clinical depression and other psychobiologic disorders.
