Susan D. Solomon, Ph.D. is Senior Advisor to the Associate Director for Behavioral and Social Sciences Research, in the Office of the Director at the National Institutes of Health.  Dr. Solomon is responsible for initiating and directing extramural programs which involve coordination across NIH institutes and other Federal Departments, particularly in the areas of violence and behavioral change to prevent disease.  In addition, she is Vice President of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies.  She also serves as co-chair of the International Working Group on Trauma, preparing guidelines for psychosocial policy and practice in social and humanitarian crises, at the request of the UN Division for Social Policy and Development and UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

 

Dr. Solomon received her doctoral degree in social psychology at Boston University, and her undergraduate and masters degrees from the University of Minnesota.

 

Previously, Dr. Solomon served as Chief of the Violence and Traumatic Stress Research Branch at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and was the Chief of the Emergency Research Program, initiating this area as a new program of research at NIMH.
