Protection/Computer Investigations
NCIS monitors critical Department of the
Navy networks to learn what our adversaries are looking for—whether
its scientific research, ships' schedules, or financial data.
Agents and analysts integrate law enforcement and counterintelligence
network information to protect people, technology and facilities
by:
- Helping Navy and Marine Corps commands
identify and shore up weak points
- Identifying trends
- Developing targeting information
- Providing indications and warning
to detect future attacks before they occur
- Pursuing criminal action against
perpetrators
- Supporting counterintelligence operations
- Coordinating with other national
intelligence and law enforcement agencies
The NCIS program has computer investigations
and operations agents assigned throughout the world focusing
on hackers, criminal groups, foreign intelligence services,
terrorists, and insiders.
In the days of the Wild West, a criminal's
tool of choice was the revolver. Today, it's a computer. Computers
have become integral pieces of evidence in crime scenes. Every
NCIS special agent needs to know how to seize, protect, and
transport a computer and related devices so that the evidentiary
value isn't compromised. To that end, NCIS teamed up with
its investigative counterparts within DOD to create the Defense
Computer Investigative Computer Training Program.
