- New Policy on Graduate Student Compensation (12/10/2001)
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) have issued a new policy on graduate student compensation using funds from NIH research grants and cooperative agreements. Under this new policy, the maximum amount awarded by the NIH for the support of a graduate student supported by a research grant or a cooperative agreement is tied to the zero level National Service Award (NRSA) postdoctoral stipend in effect at the time the grant award is issued. The compensation of graduates must be reasonable; compensation includes salary or wages, fringe benefits, and tuition reimbursement.

Effective with the enactment of P.L. 107-206 on August 2, 2002, the National Research Service Award Program has been renamed the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award Program as a tribute to the exceptional contributions Dr. Kirschstein has made to the NIH and the Nation. The T15 Short-Term Courses in Research Ethics Page has been updated with current information on Principal Investigators, Key Personnel, grant abstracts and related links for T15 grantee programs. The page now includes a lists of Active Awards and Inactive Awards, as well as a list of all e-mail addresses for Principal Investigators and Key Personnel for active awards, to facilitate communication among the T15 community. Comments and/or updates to T15 information may be sent to Dr. Lawrence Friedman, NHLBI.
- K30 Clinical Research Curriculum Award Page Updated (10/2001)
The K30 Clinical Research Curriculum Award Page has been updated with current information on Principal Investigators, Key Personnel, grant abstracts and related links for K30 grantee programs. The page now includes a list of awards as well as a list of all e-mail addresses for Principal Investigators and Key Personnel to facilitate communication among the K30 community. Comments and/or updates to K30 information may be sent to Dr. Lawrence Friedman, NHLBI.
- The Early Career Progress of NRSA Predoctoral Trainees and Fellows (03/2001)
Dr. Georgine Pion's comprehensive study on the career outcomes of NRSA supported predoctoral trainees and fellows is now available on the Outcomes and Administrative Information Page. This report compares Ph.D. recipients in behavioral and biomedical sciences who have received at least nine months of NRSA support to their colleagues without NRSA support. Data show that in most respects NRSA recipients outperform their counterparts. The relative contribution of selection and program effects are discussed.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has analyzed the recently issued
report from the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), Addressing the Nation's Changing Needs for Biomedical and Behavioral Scientists and has prepared a statement that describes NIH intentions to implement selected recommendations. The NIH offers this statement for comment in order to determine the views of the extramural community prior to implementation.
