Nuclear Exercise at Browns Ferry Tomorrow
TVA and various federal, state and local agencies will conduct a regularly scheduled preparedness drill on Wednesday, Sept. 24, to demonstrate how they would respond to an emergency at Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant.

The exercise, part of a long-term emergency-drill program, will involve about 1,000 TVA and state of Alabama employees and emergency responders in Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison and Morgan counties.

Residents of these counties may see radiological-monitoring teams or other responders in action as part of the exercise. During the exercise, sirens at the plant may be heard in areas near Browns Ferry.

Utilities operating nuclear-power plants are required by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to conduct emergency exercises each year. Every two years the Federal Emergency Management Agency evaluates state and county readiness to protect public health and safety.

FEMA and NRC representatives will evaluate responders on the appropriateness of their actions to ensure the health and safety of the public.

A public meeting to discuss response to the exercise is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26, in the Morgan County Courthouse basement auditorium at 302 Lee St. N.E. in Decatur, Ala.

Muscle Shoals EA Meeting Thursday
The Muscle Shoals Sub-Section of the Engineering Association will meet Thursday, Sept. 25. The meeting will be at 11:30 a.m. in the Chemical Engineering Building cafeteria on the Muscle Shoals Reservation.

Calvin Underwood, Engineering Association President, and other Southern section officers are scheduled to attend.

Pizza will be provided, and attendees are invited to bring their own drinks. Those planning to attend should e-mail or call Joan Polly (386-3747).
