Sandia Adhesive Bonding Research is focused on achieving a good bond initially and understanding the mechanisms leading to bond failure More information is available at mfgshop.sandia.gov/1400_ext/1400_ext_AdhesiveBond.htm Department of Energy (DOE)-Sandia National Laboratories Understanding and controlling the factors affecting adhesion is vital for consistently successful bonding operations. A new area of reaserch involves microbonding. Their research into adhesion is focused on achieving a good bond initially and understanding the mechanisms leading to bond failure eventually. They are working to understand crack propagation at the interface and we have developed a variety of mechanical testing techniques to evaluate this failure mode. The factors affecting wetting and formation of the bond (e.g., contamination, surface roughness) are being explored to further our knowledge. In addition to research into adhesion, we do bonding and joining of components for our customers. We have formulated new materials that reduce or eliminate the Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H;) hazards associated with various polymer processes. We can help researchers make new bonds, analyze existing bonds, and understand failed bonds. Capabilities: Bonding: Our bonding operations employ anaerobic, aerobic and UV curing methods on many different geometries. Materials Selection: We will work with you to select materials that have the desired properties, a processing routine compatible with the components being encapsulation, a chemistry that is compatible with the components, and minimal environmental hazards. We will develop the assembly and tooling processes. Cleaning/Surface Preparation: We use a variety of surface preparation techniques such as: solvent cleaning (both traditional and alternative), plasma cleaning, sandblasting, chemical etching and priming. Adhesives Research: We perform research into the formation of the adhesive bond interface (wetting, surface roughness, contamination) and the mechanisms for debonding.
