Postage Rates

Postage Options
In addition to stamps, you have many postage alternatives.
Postage is what it costs to mail a package or letter. The fees differ by service, what and where you're mailing and any particular requirements such as speed and special handling. Depending on what you mail, how much of it and how much work you do to prepare it, you could qualify for certain discount rates. There are a number of alternatives for handling postage fees. Depending on your typical mailing needs, different postage options may be preferable for you. Here are some of the popular postage options:

Stamps
The most widely known postage payment option. Postage stamps are popular because they are straightforward, easy to use, and can add a personal touch. Stamps come in a variety of styles and pre-printed denominations for a variety of mailing needs. You can buy them in a number of different places; your local Post Office™, vending machines, grocery stores, even online!

Mailing Permit Imprints
If you're a business or non-profit mailer with fairly standard, cyclical mailings you should consider a mailing permit. For an annual fee you can set up a centralized postage payment account with the Postal Service. When you use a Mailing Permit account you print a permit imprint indicia on your mail pieces. This type of indicia simply indicates 'Postage Paid" without specifying an amount and your mailing account is deducted on the basis of weight and standardization of your mailing.

Postage Meters
With the latest technology advances meters have become even more popular as a convenient way to pay for postage and track costs. Meters are machines that are leased from commercial manufacturers in cooperation with the Postal Service that allow you to dial-up and download postage directly into the machine and then print it as you need it. Meters print postage meter indicia indicating the postage paid directly onto the mailpiece or onto an approved label. A particular advantage of meters is the ability to print the exact rate you need for your particular mailing.

PC Postage™ Products
If you prefer doing business from your computer, consider PC Postage software products. Like postage meters, PC Postage products and services are available from commercial providers in cooperation with the Postal Service. With PC Postage software you can purchase postage over the Internet and use your standard desktop printer to print the PC Postage indicia directly onto envelopes or labels for your mail or packages. There are great additional features like printing variable rates, integration with scales and related online applications, and postage expense reports.
